Who We Are

The Mathews County Health Department offers services for the prevention, investigation, and control of communicable diseases.  These services involve screening, diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up of all persons exposed to specific diseases such as tuberculosis, sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), HIV/AIDS, foodborne illnesses, and more. Information is given regarding prevention from exposure, recognizing symptoms, and obtaining treatment. Tuberculin skin test, free in some instances, chest x-rays, evaluation, and monitoring of TB cases and contacts are available.  Anonymous HIV testing sites can be accessed by calling the Virginia Department of Health and AIDS Hotline at 1-800-533-4148.  Information on medication and other assistance is available for low-income persons.

Epidemiology specifically focuses on cases of reportable diseases, which are diseases considered to be of great public health importance. The Code of Virginia requires that these diseases be reported when they are diagnosed by doctors and laboratories. Reporting allows for the collection of statistics that show how often the disease occurs, the detection of outbreaks, and the identification of dangerous practices or products.

Please visit the website for more information about these services.
