Who We Are

The Bedford County Health Department works to prevent, control, and test communicable diseases.  Communicable diseases are infectious diseases that are easily transmitted from person to person.  The health department staff provides information on a variety of communicable diseases, as well as how to properly report and respond to disease outbreaks.   Various diseases that can impact the area include:

  • Influenza
  • Lyme Disease
  • MRSA
  • Norovirus
  • Salmonella
  • Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs)
  • Tuberculosis

The health department also offers confidential testing for sexually transmitted infections (STI) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).  Call for clinic times and appointments.  To have questions answered by trained counselors, call the Virginia HIV/STD/Viral Hepatitis Hotline at (800) 533-4148, Monday–Friday, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm.

Most clinic services are offered only at the Lynchburg Health Department.  Please call if you have any questions or visit the website for more details.
