Who We Are
A program of the Goochland-Powhatan Community Services, the Virginia House is a psychiatric rehabilitation program for persons with serious mental illness that beg. The focus of programming, which is voluntary, is to develop a person’s ability to self manage the symptoms of mental illness, to become as independent as possible, and to function as a part of the community. Each participant has a specialized plan of action with goals and objectives that are developed with the Virginia House staff. That staff consists of a supervisor and three psychiatric rehabilitation counselors. The programs are coordinated with, but separate from, services consumers receive from psychiatrists and case managers.
The program's philosophy is that each individual, regardless of disability or degree of disability, has potential for independence and for being a contributing member of the community. Maximizing their potential offers consumers a better quality of life and advances the community as a whole.
