Who We Are

The Hampton City Health Department's Communicable Disease Department is responsible for district disease surveillance, investigation and prevention and control of diseases especially those specifically outlined in the Regulations for Disease Reporting and Control. Our staff consists of trained physicians, nurses and epidemiologists.

The department offers a Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI) Clinic - Any person who suspects they may have been exposed to a sexually transmitted disease (syphilis, gonorrhea, chlamydia, etc.) may be seen in this clinic. Examinations are free.

Testing and counseling for the AIDS virus (HIV) are also available at no cost. All services are confidential. No eligibility for services is required.  The Hampton Health Department is an Anonymous Testing Site (ATS) for the Virginia Department of Health.  Call the Virginia HIV/STD/Viral Hepatitis Hotline at 1 (800) 533-4148 for information on additional services and programs.

The Tuberculosis Control Clinic provides screening and follow-up services for people with tuberculosis and for those who have been exposed to the disease. Recommendations are made regarding x-rays and drug therapy. Public health nurses serve as case managers and are instrumental in monitoring follow-up and ensuring completion of medication regime through Direct Observational Therapy (DOT). They also perform epidemiological follow-up of TB cases to identify contacts and ensure proper medical follow-up. Call (757)-727-1172, ext 133 for further information.
