Who We Are

The Asylum Office in Arlington has jurisdiction for asylum-related matters, including the District of Columbia (Washington, D.C.), Maryland, and Virginia.


This office provides services to persons seeking asylum in the United States. Applicants must mail application to Texas. Within 21 days of application being received at the Texas Service Center applicant will be notified of interview date. The interviews take place at an Asylum Office, in Virginia, usually in Arlington. The decision, made approximately 14 days after the interview, will be either a referral to the Immigration Court for further consideration, or a recommended approval. The entire process should take less than 180 days from the filing date.


Applicants must bring their own interpreters; cannot use personal attorney or representative, or witnesses.
