Who We Are

Communicable diseases are infectious diseases that are easily transmitted from person to person.  The Chesapeake Health Department staff provides information on a variety of communicable diseases, as well as how to properly report and respond to disease outbreaks.   Various diseases that can impact the area include:

  • Influenza
  • Lyme Disease
  • MRSA
  • Norovirus
  • Salmonella
  • Tuberculosis

The health department also offers confidential testing for sexually transmitted infections (STI) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).  Call for clinic times and appointments.  To have questions answered by trained counselors, call the Virginia HIV/STD/Viral Hepatitis Hotline at (800) 533-4148, Monday–Friday, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm.
