Ashland Christian Emergency Service (ACES) joined with MCEF (Mechanicsville Churches Emergency Functions) in 2014 to offer rides to seniors (60+) who live in zip codes Zip codes 23005, 23059 and 23069) and who are no longer able to drive but would like to stay in their home as long as possible. This free transportation program is for scheduled medical appointments, grocery shopping and for personal business, such as banking. A rider must be ambulatory. While transportation is focused on seniors, rides are also provided to anyone, regardless of age, who may have a medical condition that requires frequent trips for medical treatments such as dialysis or chemotherapy. An envelope is provided to riders so that, if they wish, they can make a donation to help sustain our program.

Volunteer drivers are paid 25 cents per mile and are provided liability insurance coverage. Potential drivers are required to provide a valid driver’s license, their DMV record and give ACES permission to request a background check. They are also required to take 8 hours of driver’s safety training (usually provided by AARP). All expenses are paid by ACES. Through a web-based program, volunteer drivers can select rides, based on their schedule. We ask that the drivers try to give at least 4 rides per month.
