Who We Are
Hampton Roads Transit (HRT) serves all of North and South Hampton Roads. Public transportation on a fixed route is provided throughout the seven cities of Chesapeake, Hampton, Newport News, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Suffolk, and Virginia Beach. Older adults (age 65 and over) and people with disabilities who have a valid HRT Discounted Fare ID card, HRT ADA Certification card, DMV ID, or a valid Medicare card and photo identification are eligible to pay a discounted fare on HRT’s fixed-route services. Seniors and Medicare cardholders do not have to complete an application. simply bring a State/Government/Military ID or Medicare Card to a listed location.
All HRT vehicles, except light rail, are equipped with electronic fare boxes. Fare boxes accept cash, coins, and GoPasses. Fare boxes and/or vehicle operators cannot make change, so please have the exact fare when boarding. All sales are final. HRT does not give refunds on any purchases
There are approximately 240 buses, 7 light rail cars, 52 vanpool vehicles, and 159 demand response vehicles in operation to provide a variety of transportation. A Discounted Fare ID is available to be downloaded from the website. For more information, call Customer Service at 757-222-6000. There is a processing center in Norfolk and in Hampton.
