Who We Are
The Hospital for Extended Recovery is a 35-bed long term acute care hospital located inside Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. The hospital opened November 2001 and was the first hospital within a hospital in the state of Virginia.
A patient is referred by an attending physician and then evaluated by a RN case manager. The decision to admit is based on the patient meeting long-term acute care criteria and collaboration between the attending physician, the case managers, patients and their families.
Located on the seventh floor of the Kaufman Pavilion at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, this specialty facility is an acute care hospital specifically designed for patients with medically complex needs who need to stay in an acute care setting on average of three to four weeks.
Patients are treated with a broad range of health needs, including: Wound care, Infectious disease, Post-surgical conditions, Complex IV therapy, Respiratory conditions, Heart and circulatory conditions. The Hospital for Extended Recovery is an acute care hospital for treatment of diagnosed problems.
The Hospital is equipped to handle medically complex patients, so the level and intensity of care provided here is higher than at a skilled nursing, rehabilitation facility or a nursing home.
